Elliott Erwitt’s New York, Revised Edition
by BSS Technical on Jan 31, 2024The iconic and historic images of master photographer Elliott Erwitt reflect the vibrant soul of New York. The Paris-born photographer settled in the American metropolis in 1948 and has since wandered the city with his camera, capturing unexpected and everyday street moments. As author Adam Gopnik (The New Yorker) describes in the foreword, for Erwitt, it's all about self-enlightened moments that often serendipitously came about and surprise.
His images are not only vivid and authentic but are also characterized by a special irony that arises from the everyday situations they portray. Encounters between celebrities next to unknown New Yorkers. Unusual settings, such as a stolen moment of three smoking men in tutus at the bar (p.92) taking a break.
Or the girl on the roof performing a ballet jump (p.118). And dancing children practicing for later, but already exuding maturity (p.42-43). The Magnum photographer (since 1953, introduced by Robert Capa) reveals double layers in his timeless black-and-white images. He often combines dry humor with a touch of melancholy, in which the city absorbs its inhabitants.
In this revised edition, Erwitt presents compelling work from his entire career between 1946 and 2011. 16 pages have been added with previously unreleased images from the nostalgic 1950s and 1960s. Elliott Erwitt's New York is the last book the photographer personally contributed to before his death on November 29, 2023, at the age of 95.
