New York Revised Edition by Thomas Hoepker

German photographer Thomas Hoepker (1936) has had a strong connection with New York since the late 1960s. For over fifty years, he commuted between Germany and The Big Apple, where he held various roles, from correspondent for Stern and Art Director to Magnum photographer. Like Elliott Erwitt, Hoepker feels most at home in the vibrant street life, where he enjoys capturing the crowds and anonymous individuals, each carrying their own stories.
The second edition of Hoepker's New York, published by teNeues, includes 16 additional pages and 37 new, previously unpublished images covering the period from 1960 to 2019. Hoepker captures people and their way of life in an unfiltered and direct manner, while also showcasing the photographer's own artistic development.
The photos, sourced from Hoepker's extensive archive, vary widely in style, from black-and-white formats to color and architectural photographs, as well as vivid street snapshots. As poet and Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Simic aptly describes, Hoepker's photos capture moments of beauty and shock that even the most sensitive observer might overlook, which enhances the pleasure and impact of viewing the images in this book.
